about the revolution

Think all revolutions are violent? Think again.

Who is this Geezer?

Menno Simons (1496-1561) was one of the leaders of the 16th century Anabaptist movement in Europe. One of the central beliefs of the Anabaptist faith is a commitment to Jesus' way of peace and nonviolence. Modern-day Mennonites take their name from Menno.

Who are we?

The peaceful revolution is an initiative of the Peace Ministries Program of Mennonite Central Committee Canada to build a culture of peace. Society says we should only be concerned with ourselves and our own security, happiness and well-being. The peaceful revolution says that we are all in this together. Our own well-being is connected to all the other people on the planet, and the planet itself.

The peaceful revolution says that peace and security are built through peaceful means. And, that we can build peace by the way we live and the actions we take. You can revolt peacefully by making choices for a healthier environment and living with just enough, saying no to war and violence, and working at your relationships with others.

What is peace?

For many people peace is simply the absence of war. MCC takes it way beyond that. MCC believes that peace encourages people to live in ways that make life possible for others. Peace is about food to eat, water to drink, loving family and friends nearby, and opportunities to learn and grow. It is about living in harmony with the earth. Peace is the destination and also the way to get there.

MCC's belief in peace is rooted in Jesus Christ. Jesus taught, lived and died the way of peace. His resurrection is a vindication of this way of peace. Those who follow him are called to be makers of peace. The spirit of Jesus gives the gift of peace to all people who desire it; this spirit also makes it possible for them to offer peace to the world around them. MCC believes that the peace of Jesus Christ lies at the heart of God's good news.
